In economics, a local currency, in its common usage, is a currency not backed by a national government (and not necessarily legal tender), and intended to trade only in a small area. This amounts to a formalization of the barter system, a useful tool for raising awareness of the state of the local economy, especially among those who may be unfamiliar or uncomfortable with traditional bartering. These currencies are also referred to as community currency, and are a form of alternative currency or complementary currency. They encompass a wide range of forms, both physically and financially, and often are associated with a particular economic discourse.

A. You ask a very complex question. Good because it means foreign goods will cost more and so local businesses can keep a lower pricea dn thus sell more products and make more local jobs. Bad because we'll have to pay more for foreign made things like car replacement parts. j

Why does local currency need to be re-branded and reshaped from older, once spendable, money?
Q. Why does the design change in our currency? If we have old 1 pound notes, they are not usable, even though we still have single pound units.
Asked by johndehaura - Thu Jul 8 22:21:11 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That is often done because of counterfeiting. It takes a long time for a counterfeiter to make plates to print money, and with the newer security features such as the holograms on the 5, 10 and 20 notes, it's getting harder all the time. I'm not British, but I thought you could still exchange those old notes at the Bank of England. I liked the fact that they put Adam Smith on the new 20 notes, but I'm not sure that he would approve if he were alive today given the central management of the economy.
