In economics, the term currency can refer to a particular currency, for example Pound Sterling, or to the coins and banknotes of a particular currency, which comprise the physical aspects of a nation's money supply. The other part of a nation's money supply consists of money deposited in banks (sometimes called deposit money), ownership of which can be transferred by means of cheques or other forms of money transfer such as credit and debit cards. Deposit money and currency are money in the sense that both are acceptable as a means of exchange, but money need not necessarily be currency.

Historically, money in the form of currency has predominated. Usually (gold or silver) coins of intrinsic value commensurate with the monetary unit (commodity money), have been the norm. By contrast, modern currency, as fiat money, is intrinsically worthless.

Where is the best place to get information about investing in foreign currencies?
Q. I have been looking at investing in some foreign currencies (1 in particular), but would like to find out as much as I can before working out whether this would be a good investment or not. Where is the best place to find this sort of information? I was planning on buying it now while their currency market is in all sorts of disarray and then sitting on it until sometime in the future where (hopefully) the country has sorted itself out and the market has stabalised. I am not looking to make a quick buck as I know that in this case it will take quite a while to see any chance of selling for a profit, but plan to be in this for the long game...

A. All investment are risky.. there is no such thing as a "safe" investment. What you trade depends upon you & your personality. You can download any of the major brokerage platforms - I like thinkorswim.com but there are plenty of others. The provide what they call a "paper account" - a demo account in effect. The give you a balance of play money & you can play around with their system & see how you go. This will give you an appreciation of how things work & the risks involved. Currencies are a little more exciting as you tend to trade on margin - its the most liquid market, so you always get moves of one way or another. I trade all three like so.. - currency [long call options only - making long term plays] - commodities [via etfs &… [cont.]

Do Scandinavian countries like Denmark, Sweden and Norway accept each others currencies?
Q. Do I have to carry all three currencies when I go there? How about Euros - is it accepted there? What souvenirs should I buy from these countries?

A. They are not all on the euro and you generally can't use money from one directly in the another of the countries. I spend time in Lund, Sweden sometimes and visit Copenhagen and other places in Denmark as well as Sweden. You can just use your ATM card and get the currency you need in each country. As for souvenirs, Swedish glass is quite nice or a hand carved dala horse. Royal Copenhagen porcelin is a good choice from Denmark or maybe something from Georg Jensen. Norway sweaters or woodcrafts are nice. There are always the typical t-shirts, etc.
