In economics, the term currency can refer either to a particular currency, for example the US dollar, or to the coins and banknotes of a particular currency, which comprise the physical aspects of a nation's money supply. The other part of a nation's money supply consists of money deposited in banks (sometimes called deposit money), ownership of which can be transferred by means of cheques or other forms of money transfer such as credit and debit cards. Deposit money and currency are money in the sense that both are acceptable as a means of exchange, but money need not necessarily be currency. Historically, money in the form of currency has predominated. Usually (gold or silver) coins of intrinsic value commensurate with the monetary unit (commodity money), have been the norm. By contrast, modern currency, as fiat money, is intrinsically worthless. The prevalence of one type of currency over another in commodity money systems has arisen, usually when a government designates through decrees, that only particular monetary units shall be accepted in payment for taxes. GNU Free Documentation License How is new currency injected into circulation? Q. Say the central bank (fed) decides to add more currencies to the economy. How is it injected into circulation? I thought about Fed go buying bonds from the market with the new currency. But then how does Fed control the interest rate effect of the purchase? For example, Fed wants to add 100bn new currencies into the market, then first they have to find 100bn Treasury bills or bonds in the market. Under different liquidity conditions, the 100bn may lower the interest rate by different amount. How does Fed control that? Asked by Currency E - Sat Jul 26 09:20:03 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The fed has a branch that loans money to member banks it's always available, they call it the window. basically they lower the amount by raising the discount rate and increase the supply by lowering the rate. Q. I'm going to Bucharest, Romania on Saturday in the UK you cant get any Romanian currency. I have been advised to take US Dollars? But from your experience what is the best currency to take? Asked by peterjamesking - Wed Mar 7 12:46:56 2007 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments A. If you are from UK., take Sterling and credit cards; no need to change your money twice. At the airport, don't change more than you have to, the rate is bad - far better to use banks(you will need to show your passport). Also, if you want a taxi from the airport, use an official one, or you will get ripped off! I was there last July.
