What do currency speculators look for when considering buying a currency?
Q. Based on what I've learned in Macroeconomics, it seems like it would make sense if someone bought the currency of a high exporting country. There is less of this country's currency floating around the world market and thus it will not depreciate in value as much as say the dollar because we run a trade deficit. Am a right for thinking this? Also, would a currency with a low inflation rate also be a good option for earning a profit? Besides these two things, what are other factors that are considered by currency speculators?

A. A currency speculator is generally a trader, meaning very short-term. Individual traders don't care about Macroeconomics. Banks and hedge funds may, but you're not going to get a lot of answers from them here.

I have a PayPal account made in the States so it is in US Dollars but now I live in Denmark so my account appears in Danish Krone. If I am not wrong there ight be an option to change and choose the currency you want. That might help. Good Luck

What determines when a currency has more value than another monetary unit?
Q. What are the factors behind the value of a currency. I understand that the value of the U.S. dollar is always changing in value but what determines when this is more valued or less valued than other currencies? What makes the British Pound the strongest or one of the strongest currencies in the world? I meant to have a question mark at the end of my first sentence.

A. A number of factors. When currencies are not 'fixed', they fluctuate based on international supply and demand: the relative strengths of the various national economies (GDP, investment, business activity). Currency speculation affects the strength of a currency: investors buy up that currency - betting that it will be stronger in the future, based on the current and projected strengths of national economies. In this case, a currency becomes another commodity (like a car) but currency speculation doesn't create wealth, it only transfers it. When currencies are 'fixed', their strength is tied to a particular resource or product, like gold. So, when that product is worth more, the currency is stronger. This tends to over-inflate the value of… [cont.]

What determines whether a currency is strong or weak?
Q. I don't know whether a strong currency would be the more things you can buy with 1 unit of that currency i.e. 1 pound. Or is a strong currency, where you can't buy a lot with one unit. I know when inflation occurs it has a particular effect on the strength of a currency but I cannot remember what, if I had to guess it would probably be that it causes the strength of your currency to decrease.

A. The Florentine florin had been around for sufficiently long enough to be accepted as stable currency not only in Italy but throughout Europe. Guilders, ducats, crowns were other currencies in use at the time in Italy. You $100 - very roughly - would be worth perhaps 1430 florins in Renaissance Italy, a considerable sum of money for the average person.

A. JJ's suggestion to do this through contacts with people who travel is good. Generally, the larger branches of banks have currency exchanges facilities where you can buy foreign money. It isn't necessarily cheap since you can't buy (or it won't be cost effective to buy) just a single small bill usually. You can also check stores for collectibles or coin shops for foreign money.

Why should $ USD be the trading currency for all our international transaction?
Q. All our international transaction occurs in USD & not in INR. This occurs no matter whom we trade with. For example we buy crude oil from Saudi Arabia, yet we pay them in $ & not in Rial or INR. Why should we use $ in payment, why not INR or some other country be the trading currency. This not the case with India, all over the world they do this. Other dominant currency is euro. But why should international monetory be controled by rich nations, why not it be poor nation. Why should a fate of one country be decided by other country ?
Asked by Dhanasekaran K - Sat Oct 6 13:32:16 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Because the currencies you mention are considered "soft" currencies. "Hard" currencies like the U.S. Dollar and Euro are more widely traded on currency exchanges and are more liquid currencies. Also they are a preferred reserve currency because of the large size and stability of their economies. That's why some commodities like oil are bought and sold in $ or Euro, because the people selling the oil prefer $ or Euro.

A. I'm not sure about Euros, but they do take US dollars without any problem, so I am sure that it would be the same for Euros. The only issue is that they will give you change back in their local currency, so make sure you have some small bills with you so that you don't end up with too much foreign money that you can't spend. Money changers are there, but when I last traveled through Dubai, they only changed larger bills. Some of the restuarants and shops also accept credit cards with out any problems.

Whenever they are mentioned, or used, they are always as one of these three signs." I'm not a US citizen but do US dollars have "In God We Trust" printed on them? Do they have "I promise to pay the bearer on demand..." Also, dollar bills/paper money = fiat currency, no longer backed by gold. You may want to consider how important that is to US citizens. A. The airports don't charge any extra just whatever the exchange rate is. I've noticed though that the airport rate is usually a little lower. You can often get a higher rate at the hotels or closer to your location. Just wait and see if you can exchange at your hotel, if not they can usually advise you where to go. Make sure that you are aware of what the current rate is so you know if the rate they quote is a fair one.

A. I think of one qualifying currency, and that is The Japanese Yen. Note it is also true the Yuan of China is also pegged, until recently to the U.S. dollar. So as dollars dropped in value, the Yuan does too. It is also true that Yuan is kept artificially devaluated as its economy heats up, with Yuan pegged to the dollar relatively it would not swing up in value. Qualitatively... the results are Japanese yen -a carry trade and cheap borrowing rates (currently at .5% and some people use that rate to gamble their housing mortgages. (its alot cheaper than other countries interest rate) - that yen has been cheap as you can borrow as much as you need very cheap , so its supply is abundant coming from the central bank and its associated… [cont.]
