How to write a personal statement to a Scholarship Committee?
Q. I have found a scholarship for students with (LD) - Learning Disability witch I do have and one of the things I have to do other than fill out the application form is I have to write a personal statement, I am having a hard time on what I should and shouldn't say on the personal statement. Any suggestions on what I should and shouldn't say on the personal statement? The name of the scholarship is called Minds in Motion (The Justin Eves Foundation) if that helps anyone out. How would I write a statement stating that a driver wasn't speeding when I was a passenger?
Q. To keep the story short, the driver got a speeding ticket and I was a passenger in the car. We both believe that the officer was exaggerating on the speed of what he clocked us at. Now, the driver is planning on fighting it in court but I won't be able to appear. The driver wants me to write a statement saying that he was not going the speed that the officer wrote on the ticket. He wants that notarized and sent to him. The thing is that I don't know about how to go about writing this statement. I was wondering if there were templates or something like that out there that I can use so that it looks all professional and all. Thanks for your help!

A. There is no template. Many judges won't accept such letters since you won't be there to answer questions from the other side. BUT, just write it out stating who you are and where you were at what location on the street when your friend was stopped. Then indicate that you felt the officer was incorrect about the speed and list your reasons. Basically, unless you were looking at the speedometer the entire time when your friend drove, you really don't have helpful information, but it cannot hurt to try. It sounds like the issue is the actual speed, not that he wasn't' speeding at all and if that is the case, most judges might consider your statement. When you are done, take it to a notary.
